Experience as an Audio Producer
Technical Producer – the California Now podcast
I was the technical producer for California Now, Visit California’s tourism podcast, from 2019 to 2023. I edited and mixed episodes 29 through 91 of the show, handled recording remotely by web, and wrote scripts and production notes for interviews with well over a hundred guests, including an EGOT’s worth of talent:
Emmy-winning voice actor Eric Bauza, the modern voice of Bugs Bunny and countless others
Grammy-winning bluegrass artist Molly Tuttle, who also played a few songs for us
Oscar-winning director and actor Kevin Costner
Tony: X-Games winner and skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. (Not a Tony Award in the conventional sense, but you get the idea.)
Past work in public radio
Starting in 2006, I hosted a weekly college radio show while working at the student newspaper. This, along with my degree in journalism (MTSU, 2008), led me to an internship and then a job as a reporter and occasional host at Nashville Public Radio (2008-2014).
When I moved to the Bay Area, I began working in various roles at KQED San Francisco (2014-2021). I was a freelancer for The California Report, a temp and on-call reporter for KQED Science, and later a reporter for the Bay Curious podcast; several of my stories for the show now appear in the Bay Curious book that came out in 2023. I was also a freelance spot news reporter for CapRadio in Sacramento (2016-2017).
During my years in public radio, I reported, wrote, and voiced numerous national stories for NPR shows like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. I also appeared on PBS NewsHour and Science Friday. As an occasional freelance field producer, I’ve recorded for The New York Times, Radiolab, and the BBC; ask me sometime about my interview with Dolly Parton.
You can find examples of my journalistic work using audio to tell stories for NPR, KQED, and so on here. Today, my ability to tell complex science stories in conversational terms owes a great deal to my experience writing and editing scripts that sound natural to read out loud.
